Bush picks Alito as Supreme Court nominee

US President George Bush is nominating Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, according to senior Republican officials.

Alito is a long-time federal judge embraced by judicial conservatives to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
