California prison riot leaves one inmate dead
Inmates at a maximum security prison in southern California jumped guards in the prison yard, sparking a riot that left one inmate dead and at least 30 inmates and 20 guards wounded.
The riot at Calipatria State Prison, near San Diego, began yesterday afternoon when a guard was slashed in the head as he tried to search an inmate he suspected of concealing a weapon, said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
