James Dougherty, the retired Los Angeles detective who was married to the future Marilyn Monroe for four years in the 1940s, has died. He was 84.

Dougherty died on Monday in San Rafael, California, of complications of leukaemia, his stepdaughter, Annie Woods of Sabattus, told the Sun-Journal of Lewiston. He had spent much of his later years in Maine.
