Turkish explosion kills two wedding guests

An explosion in a rubbish bin in an Istanbul suburb killed a woman and her daughter and injured five people as they left a wedding party early today, television reports said.

The mother and her daughter were killed as they tried to get into their car shortly after midnight, Turkish television station CNN-Turk reported.

Five other people who were also leaving the wedding party were injured in the blast in Pendik, on the outskirts of Istanbul, CNN-Turk television reported.

There was no immediate word on what caused the explosion. Kurdish, leftist and militant Islamic groups have carried out bombings in Istanbul in the past.

On Tuesday, two explosions in rubbish bins in the popular resort city of Antalya slightly injured nine people. Police said the blasts could have been caused by bombs or exploding aerosol cans.

The blasts come as Kurdish guerrillas have been stepping up their attacks in recent months.

The bloodiest blast was in mid-July, when an explosion on a minibus in the Aegean resort town of Kusadasi killed five people, including an Irish teenager.

Since May more than 50 rebels and 30 soldiers have been killed in fighting.
