Ethiopian bandits kill at least 45 in Kenya

At least 61 people were killed during an attack by Ethiopian bandits on a remote village in northern Kenya.

Ethiopian bandits attacked villagers in the Turbi area, a remote part of Kenya about 280 miles north-east of the capital, Nairobi, killing 45 civilians, many of them children, in a raid yesterday, said police spokesman Jaspher Ombati.

Kenyan security forces later pursued the bandits, who numbered between 300 and 500, killed 16 of them and recovered 5,000 sheep and 200 cattle, the deputy Eastern Province police chief Gerald Oluoch said in a police report.

Ombati said at least 18 people were injured in yesterday’s attack and security forces also recovered 10 camels and four donkeys from the bandits.

He said no arrests have been made and a combined team of military and police was present, but the attackers were believed to have escaped to Ethiopia.
