A high school student in southern Japan threw an explosive into a classroom today, injuring 53 people.

The 18-year-old student threw what was initially believed to be a firework inside a glass jar into a classroom at Hikari public high school, Yamaguchi prefectural (state) police spokesman Katsunoru Uchida said.
