Iraqi authorities have released a top official in Saddam Hussein’s former regime because he was suffering from serious health problems, Iraq’s Justice Minister said today.

Ghazi Hammud al-Obeidi, former regional chairman in the southern Iraqi city of Kut for the former ruling Baath Party, is the first to be released of the 55 most-wanted Iraqis of Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Justice Minister Abdel Hussein Shandal said that al-Obeidi, who had been number 32 on the most wanted list, was released.

Al-Obeidi’s lawyer said he was released on April 28.
