Police report second explosion in Cairo

A second explosion near tourist sites – possibly carried out by two suicide bombers – went off today less than two hours after a downtown blast that police said was either a suicide bomber or an assailant throwing an explosive device off a bridge.

The first blast, which killed one person and injured seven, including four foreigners, was by a bus station near a five-star hotel and behind the downtown Egyptian Museum.

Less than two hours later, police reported another explosion, this time in the Sayeda Aisha area of old Cairo, an area rich with historic mosques and cemeteries.

Senior police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they had initial reports coming from the later explosion that two female suicide bombers had tried to blow themselves up at a bus stop near the Sayida Aisha mosque. Further details were not immediately available.
