Paris airport ro rebuild collapsed terminal roof

Officials today said they will rebuild the vaulted roof of Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, which collapsed last year, killing four people, and plan to reopen the terminal in two years.

Aeroports de Paris said in a statement it was not necessary to raze the entire structure.

A section of the €750m futuristic terminal’s roof collapsed on May 23, 2004, forcing it to shut down 11 months after it opened.

The target for reopening the terminal would be winter 2007-2008.

An array of structural problems gradually weakened the roof, a government-appointed commission concluded last month.

Four travellers were killed – two Chinese, one Czech and one Lebanese – and three others were injured when part of the departure hall roof of the terminal fell.

Court officials are investigating who, if anyone, should be held responsible for the collapse.
