Twelve missing after Turkish landslide

A landslide buried 21 houses in central Turkey today and at least 12 people were reported missing.

It was not clear what caused the landslide in the village of Sugozu. Police said it was not caused by heavy rains.

Regional Governor Hasan Canpolat said the buried homes were located on a slippery slope and it was too dangerous to use heavy machinery for rescue operations.

Landslides are not uncommon in central Turkey and have been blamed on the extensive deforestation of central Anatolia and poor city planning.
