US President George Bush has chosen John Negroponte, US ambassador to Iraq and former UN ambassador, to be the new director of national intelligence.

US President George Bush has chosen John Negroponte, US ambassador to Iraq and former UN ambassador, to be the new director of national intelligence.

It is a sudden job change for Negroponte, a career diplomat who was ambassador to the UN in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq.

All US security departments, including the CIA chief, will report to Negroponte.
