A British tourist paid a McDonald’s worker in the US an undisclosed reward after he handed in her wallet, stuffed with $8,700 (€5,988), it emerged today.

Carol Birmingham was on a family holiday in Orlando and carrying the deposit for a holiday home when she stopped off to get a burger for lunch.

She did not even realise she had lost the purse until the following day.

But the 62-year-old discovered the money was missing when her son Giles asked for some cash to go to Walt Disney World.

She was lucky assistant manager Ilona Barattin was on shift at the McDonald’s Playplace, which claims to be the world’s largest.

The 23-year-old had spotted the purse on the counter and inside found scores of hundred-dollar notes, but no identification.

“A lot of people say, ’I wouldn’t (return the money)’, but I think they would if they were put in the situation,” Ms Barattin said. “It was the right thing to do.”

The purse was handed in to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando where Ms Birmingham was able to retrieve the cash in full.

She returned to McDonald’s yesterday to give Ms Barattin an undisclosed reward.
