President congratulates Bush ahead of inauguration

President Mary McAleese today sent a message of congratulations to George W Bush on the eve of his second inauguration as President of the United States.

As final preparations were underway for the ceremony in Washington DC President McAleese said she looked forward to continuing the close ties between Ireland and the US.

“Over many generations, the people of our two great nations have forged an enduring relationship of goodwill and friendship,” President McAleese said.

“The many layers that connect Ireland and the United States are today more vibrant and dynamic than ever.

“I am confident that, under your guidance, our partnership will continue to enrich the lives of all our people.”

President McAleese also noted President Bush’s work to further the Northern Ireland peace process.

“I would also like to express my special appreciation for the support and encouragement offered by your administration, and by you personally, in our efforts to advance the cause of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.”

President Bush secured another four years in the White House with more than 50% of the popular vote and the support of the electoral colleges across the US.

Unprecedented security measures are taking hold in Washington DC with massive numbers of police and security personnel and hi-tech equipment monitoring the celebrations.

Military jets will patrol a widened no-fly zone above the city and anti-aircraft missile batteries are at the ready.

Washington’s rivers will be off-limits to boat traffic while on the ground thousands of plain-clothes agents will monitor the crowds, with some officers deployed to the rooftops.
