Mahmoud Abbas, sworn in as Palestinian Authority president today, said he was extending his hand in peace to Israel, but made no mention in his inaugural speech of how he would deal with Palestinian militants, according to an advance copy obtained by reporters.

Just a day before the ceremony, Israel had cut off ties with Abbas in a major snub and said it would only renew contacts once the Palestinian leader reins in militants.
