Slurry attack on Euro MP

Controversial Euro-MP Robert Kilroy Silk had a bucket of slurry tipped over him tonight as he turned up for a live radio show.

The former chat show host faced the attack before he appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Any Questions? At Manchester High School for Girls.

Host Jonathan Dimbleby told listeners at the start of the programme what had happened to the panel member, who had to be cleaned up and change his clothes.

Some of the slurry also hit Cabinet Office minister Ruth Kelly, who was walking into the building with Mr Kilroy Silk.

The MEP, who was elected as a member of the UK Independence Party but has since resigned the party’s whip, said on air that his assailant had shouted: “In the name of Islam.”

In January this year, Mr Kilroy-Silk stepped down as presenter of Kilroy after being taken off air by BBC bosses for describing Arabs as “suicide bombers, limb-amputators, women repressors”.

Muslim leaders were outraged at his remarks, but the ex-presenter himself was unrepentant.

A BBC spokesman said tonight: “About 20 minutes before the programme went to air Mr Kilroy Silk was coming into the building with Ruth Kelly and as they were entering someone came along with a bucket of farmyard slurry, shouted something at him, threw it over him and ran off.

“Some of it hit Ruth Kelly on the jacket.

“Mr Kilroy Silk obviously had to change his clothes.

“He took his seat as Jonathan Dimbleby was introducing the show.”

The East Midlands MEP resigned the UKIP whip in October amid a furious row over his bid for the leadership.
