Chinese mine blast death toll tops 160

The death toll in a coal mine explosion in central China rose to 166 today, making it the deadliest accident to hit the country’s disaster-plagued mining industry in recent years.

Officials said rescue efforts were being blocked by fires and toxic fumes in the Chenjiashan mine, which was hit by a huge gas explosion on Sunday.
