Thousands of villagers began to evacuate an island in northern Papua New Guinea today after a volcano erupted, spewing ash and rocks over fields of crops and injuring five people.

Thousands of villagers began to evacuate an island in northern Papua New Guinea today after a volcano erupted, spewing ash and rocks over fields of crops and injuring five people.

More than 9,000 people were being shipped off Manam Island in the aftermath of Tuesday’s eruption.
