Fighting escalates in Fallujah attack

US tanks and armoured vehicles were seen moving after nightfall toward northern Fallujah supported by artillery and aircraft.

Insurgents responded by firing mortar rounds and automatic weapons, residents said.

The US military confirmed marines and soldiers have launched a major ground attack against Fallujah, striking the north-eastern Askari neighbourhood.
