Woman could be jailed for Mexican anthem errors

A woman who fumbled a few phrases of Mexico’s national anthem while singing the song before a soccer game in Guadalajara will have to answer for her actions, and could face a fine or even jail time.

Mexico’s Interior Department said today that it planned to question Guadalupe Madrigal about the lyrics, which she got wrong while singing before an October 30 soccer match between teams from Guadalajara and Monterrey.

It was unclear when Madrigal would be questioned, or what the offensive lyrics had been.

The statement said Madrigal could be fined about £500 or face 36 hours in jail.

“Enforcing the strict letter of the law for our national hymn ensures that this patriotic symbol is preserved for future generations,” the statement said.

Madrigal, who was unavailable for comment, appeared to have forgotten or confused some of the hymn’s lyrics.

On September 15, Mexico celebrated 150 years of the anthem by calling for an international sing-along.
