Mexican navy seizes two tons of cocaine

The Mexican navy seized more than two tons of cocaine aboard a fishing boat off the country’s southern Pacific coast.

The cocaine was found hidden in the ship’s fuel compartment after a US Coast Guard vessel tipped Mexico about the suspicious ship, the Navy said.

Nine Mexican crew members of the Mexican-flagged ship Baturro IV were arrested.

The ship was spotted about 950 miles south-west of the port of Salina Cruz.

The Coast Guard searched the vessel after being told it was supposedly fishing for shark, but was not using nets. They found 90 packages containing 4,950 pounds of cocaine.

The US vessel alerted Mexican authorities, who formally seized the ship and took it into port further north in Manzanillo, where the crew members were charged.
