Karzai close to election victory, pending investigations

Hamid Karzai’s victory in Afghanistan’s first presidential election could be sealed within days, a top election adviser said today – unless investigators uncover major fraud.

With 37% of the votes from the October 9 election counted, the US-backed interim leader has won 63.1% support and racked up a 46-point lead over his nearest challenger.
