A strong offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 shook southern Japan today. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was centred some 55 miles below the ocean floor near Yonaguni Island, which lies between Okinawa and Taiwan, about 1,240 miles south-west of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.
