Seven killed in new blasts

Suspected separatists bombed a crowded market, a tea plantation and other sites today, killing seven people in a second day of explosions and gun attacks that have left at least 57 dead and more than 100 wounded in northeast India.

The violence across Nagaland and Assam states was some of the deadliest to hit the region, where more than three dozen insurgent groups have been active.

Troops patrolled the streets in Nagaland to prevent further bloodshed today, but the bombings continued in neighbouring Assam.

By tonight, 17 attacks had taken place over the weekend, but it wasn’t clear whether they were linked. No arrests have been made, and no one has claimed responsibility yet, police said.

But officials blamed two major separatist groups in the region – the United Liberation Front of Asom and National Democratic Front of Boroland.
