Weeping woman tells court of Pitcairn 'rapes'

A woman wept as she described being raped as a young girl by a man who is now mayor of Pitcairn Island, as his sex abuse trial opened on this remote rocky outcrop populated by descendants of the 18th-century Bounty mutineers.

The alleged victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was the first witness in the trial of Steve Christian, the most prominent of seven island men charged with a total of 55 sex crimes, some dating back 40 years.
