Explosion heard across Iraqi capital

A loud explosion echoed across the Iraqi capital early today.

A cloud of black smoke leaped up from what appeared to be the site of the blast near Haifa street, a main Baghdad thoroughfare that was the scene of fierce clashes yesterday between US forces and militants, leaving many dead and injured.

It was not immediately known what caused yesterday’s blast.
