The assistant skipper of a Staten Island ferry today admitted manslaughter and lying about his medical history before a crash that killed 11 New York commuters.

“Guilty, your honour,” Richard Smith said evenly in the New York court in an agreement with prosecutors. He acknowledged that his misconduct and inattention to duty caused the deaths last October.
