Bomb rocks election agency

A small bomb rocked Indonesia’s election commission today as the agency prepared to announce final results of the July 5 presidential election, expected to call for a run-off between the incumbent president and a former army general.

No one was injured in the blast outside a ground-floor toilet, said commission spokesman Irman, who goes by a single name.

Irman said the blast came from firecrackers. Police later described the device as a small bomb.

The explosion slightly damaged the toilet door.

The building was evacuated after the blast. It was unclear whether the announcement of the election results, scheduled for later today, would be delayed.

The results were expected to show the election going to a September run-off between former army general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

With results of more than 85% of the vote count from the July 5 poll already announced, Yudhoyono was in the lead with 33.58% – ahead of Megawati with 26.27% - but without the simple majority needed to avoid the September 20 run-off.
