French MPs voted today to reduce health spending and raise charges on workers, employers and pensioners in a bid to plug a €10.5bn hole in one of the world’s most generous health systems.

French MPs voted today to reduce health spending and raise charges on workers, employers and pensioners in a bid to plug a €10.5bn hole in one of the world’s most generous health systems.

In a first reading vote, MPs voted 358-195 to approve the reform, which would make patients consult a GP before seeing a specialist and pay €1 for each visit to the doctor, among many other changes.
