A moderate earthquake shook central Turkey overnight, authorities said today.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3, struck the town of Sultandagi in Afyon province, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said.

Afyon is about 160 miles southwest of the capital, Ankara.

Quakes are frequent in Turkey, which lies on active fault lines. Two devastating earthquakes killed about 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey in 1999.

On Friday, a magnitude-5.0 quake wrecked 67 houses in a village in eastern Turkey, killing 18 people and injuring 27.
