US president George Bush was heading to Paris today for talks with one of his strongest war critics, President Jacques Chirac, a day after Pope John Paul spelled out his opposition in no uncertain terms.

Bush got a sharp dose of Europe’s opposition to his Iraq policy yesterday, in the halls of the Vatican from the pontiff, and, loudly, in the streets of Rome from thousands of demonstrators.
