Beleaguered Rumsfeld to apologise
Amid calls for his resignation, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld prepared to apologise today for not keeping Congress informed about abuses of Iraqi prisoners, his officials said.
In a Capitol Hill appearance by the 71-year-old hawk demanded by angry lawmakers, Rumsfeld also is expected to call for the formation of an independent commission to look into the abuses and how the Defence Department handled them, one Pentagon official said.
