Seven peacekeepers injured in Kosovo
At least seven international police officers have been wounded in a shoot-out today near a prison in northern Kosovo, a UN spokesman and a Serb doctor said.
“There has been a shooting incident … this afternoon,” said Neeraj Singh, spokesman for the UN police. “The incident involved international police officers. There may be fatalities.”
Milan Ivanovic, doctor in the hospital in the Serb-held part of Kosovska Mitrovica, said the seven have been brought to his hospital and that six of them were seriously wounded.
“An American woman is in critical condition,” Ivanovic said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the shoot-out near the prison in tense Kosovska Mitrovica, which has been the scene of ethnic violence between Serbs and ethnic Albanians a month ago.
Singh said that “police are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident”.
