Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered rescue teams to be sent to Iran to help the rescue effort after a massive earthquake there today.

In a telegram to Iranian President Mohamed Khatami, Putin said he was “deeply shocked by the earthquake.”

Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Marina Ryklina said that two heavy lift aircraft with rescue workers and equipment were to leave today.
