Prodi wants more united EU front
The President of the European Commission Romano Prodi today warned that the EU nations needed to become more united over major issues.
Mr Prodi expressed concern that the divisions within the EU over the war in Iraq had mirrored the splits over the proposed new constitution at the recent European Council in Brussels.
While he said the divisions may simply be a “coincidence”, he said that it was essential that EU states now came together.
“We must have a more united Union,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“The Iraqi division was, maybe by chance, the same division that we had in the Council.
“Certainly there is no cause and effect, but during the Council I was observing and meditating that the split among the countries was the same that we had for the Iraqi wars.”
