Saddam given POW status

Saddam Hussein has been given the status of a prisoner of war, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said today.

The former Iraqi leader’s treatment will be governed by the Geneva conventions, the series of international treaties drawn up to protect soldiers and civilians in times of war.
