Doctor jailed for killing cancer patient
A doctor who admitted the manslaughter of a teenage cancer sufferer by mistakenly ordering a junior colleague to administer a fatal injection into his spine was today sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
Wayne Jowett, 18, was recovering from leukaemia when Dr Feda Mulhem made a fatal error and a powerful anti-cancer drug was injected into the young apprentice mechanic through his spine, instead of into a vein.
He realised his mistake almost immediately but doctors were powerless to reverse the devastating effects and the teenager died a month later after his body was slowly paralysed and he suffered heart failure.
At Nottingham Crown Court in England, Mr Justice Poole sentenced Mulhem to eight months imprisonment for the manslaughter and a further 10 months on five unrelated assault charges, to be served consecutively.
