Gas blast rocks Haifa

An explosion in the Israeli port city of Haifa today was apparently caused by a gas leak, police said.

The blast went off in an apartment, said local police spokesman Yehuda Maman.

Israeli security forces have been on high alert since a weekend threat by Hamas to avenge a failed attempt by Israel to kill the leadership of the Islamic militant group in a bombing in Gaza City.
