Jamaica: Two killed in elections violence
Gunmen shot and killed two men outside Jamaica’s capital in a wave of violence sparked by tumultuous local elections.
Delroy Carter, 51, was shot dead in his east Kingston home, police said. Mark Ellis, 34, was shot dead when his minivan became trapped in a crossfire of bullets on an east Kingston street.
Police said they have beefed up patrols in the neighbourhood.
Fighting broke out in east Kingston last Thursday following local government elections that the opposition Jamaica Labour Party won by a landslide, taking 11 of the 13 parish council seats.
Many Kingston neighbourhoods are still divided along party lines today, but much of the recent violence is thought to be drug-related.
