At least 21 passengers were injured today when an intercity train derailed in South Korea.

Railway spokesman Sohn Young-soo said no one was killed in the crash near the port city of Mokpo.

All the injured passengers were being examined in hospital, he said, but none were said to be in a serious condition.

The eight carriage train with 178 passengers on board was passing a building site when a steel beam fell onto the locomotive.

The front three carriages were derailed and windows were smashed, but none overturned. Railway officials had begun to repair the tracks, Sohn said.
