Oil company officials were today negotiating with union leaders representing striking Nigerian oil workers holding 97 foreign hostages – including 35 Britons - aboard oil platforms off the West African nation’s coast.

About 100 strikers have prevented the expatriate oil workers, 17 Americans also among them, from leaving four offshore rigs owned by Houston-based Transocean since April 19.
