Israeli police today found a bomb on a college campus near the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

Bomb disposal experts were making the device safe, local police chief Amichai Shai said.

The explosive was found behind a building on the Beit Berl college campus, about 12 miles north-east of Tel Aviv.

It was probably left there to be collected by Palestinian militants, Shai said. Police were searching the area for any other devices, he said.

The bomb consisted of a metal box with wires leading to a mobile phone, which is often used as a detonator.

Palestinian militants have planted dozens of bombs in Israel during the last 30 months of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Many devices are discovered and detonated by the police. Public spaces are routinely closed off while police inspect suspicious objects.

In July, a bomb planted in a cafe at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University killed nine people, including five Americans.
