US troops pound 'elite' guard positions

US forces have been bombarding elite Iraqi Republican Guard positions south of Baghdad, a senior coalition commander said today.

The deputy director of operation, Brigadier General Vince Brooks, said the US V Corps had attacked the positions of the Guard’s Medina Division with artillery and airstrikes.
