Marine cheats death with bullet-proof helmet

Royal Marine Commando Eric Walderman today showed how he cheated death after taking four head shots in his bullet-proof helmet.

Marine Walderman’s life was saved by his tough Kevlar helmet after he was caught in the gun sights of Iraqis during a savage fire-fight in Umm Qsar.

The 25-year-old had the escape as the Marines drove out the last elements of Iraqi fighters in the key port town.

The four bullets ripped through the outer camouflage of the standard-issue helmet but were stopped by the ultra-tough protective Kevlar shell.

Just an inch lower and the father-of-one could have joined the list of British casualties.

Marine Walderman is part of 40 Commando’s Alpha Company, the same unit from which three of his comrades in arms were badly burned when a gas canister exploded after being hit by a stray bullet as they stormed a building.
