Marines advance on Baghdad amid fierce fighting

Thousands of US Marines rumbled north toward Baghdad today, taking safer dirt roads to avoid cities and towns where they could face Iraqi resistance.

The build-up came as US-led warplanes and helicopters attacked Republican Guard units defending Baghdad. The intermittent sound of explosions from the outskirts of Baghdad could be heard in the centre of the city of five million.
