Cruise missiles target Saddam's palace
The US launched a major air attack on Baghdad tonight, bombing at least three sites in the centre of the Iraqi capital.
Saddam Hussein’s main presidential complex and Republican Guard compounds were the principal targets.
Witnesses said the attack hit a 10 storey building that appeared to be part of the presidential compound. The building was on fire.
CNN said the explosions were heard ten or 12 minutes after air raid sirens were heard. Anti aircraft fire could be heard around the city.
Reporter Nic Robertson, in Baghdad, said he could see at least three sites of explosions: one in what appeared to be the presidential compound and another at the ministry of planning.
