EU leaders set for Iraq summit battle

European Union leaders were facing a bruising summit today, with France showing no sign of backing down in its opposition to US plans to disarm Iraq by force.

The summit comes a day after Nato agreed to begin planning defence measures to aid Turkey in the event of a US-led war in Iraq, breaking a month-long stalemate that had opened the biggest rift in the West since the Cold War.
