Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that he could soften his insistence on a diplomatic solution to the Iraq crisis if Baghdad hampers UN weapons inspectors.

He said that inspectors have not reported obstacles to their work in Iraq and that diplomatic measures to resolve the crisis have not been exhausted, but added that if Baghdad creates difficulties, Russia could move closer to the US position on Iraq.
