Canada arrests ten in child porn probe

Canadian police have arrested 10 people and are investigating more than 200 as part of an international crackdown on child pornography.

At a news conference to announce the Canadian connection to the same probe that has brought arrests in the United States and Britain, police criticised the federal government for failing to take sufficient steps to combat child pornography.

“International co-operation is a dream – national co-operation is a nightmare,” said Detective Sergeant Paul Gillespie of the Toronto police force’s sex crime unit. “It is time for those responsible on a federal level to live up to their responsibility. We need help.”

Gillespie said police have 241 child pornography ”targets” from the investigation launched two years ago by the United States and have made 10 arrests.

American investigators say they have traced 250,000 suspected paedophiles around the world through credit card details on child pornography Web sites.
