Delight as Turkey is set for EU membership talks

Germany and France intend to propose July 1 2005 as starting date for EU membership talks with Turkey, an official said tonight.

The official said Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and President Jacques Chirac agreed on the proposal at a meeting outside Berlin yesterday.
