Fire strike suspended for new talks

A planned eight-day strike by Northern and British firefighters was called off tonight following the surprise intervention of the conciliation service Acas into the bitter fire dispute.

Firemen and women had been due to walk out at 9am on Wednesday as part of a lcampaign to win a 40% pay rise.
